Nokia N800: I love it
except for a few things:
- Linux, not because of Nokia but because of me not having used it before too much.. :)
- memory handling, even with the virtual memory I can add and I did with the original memory card that came along the device, is not as good as I like it to be
- apps wont start when I want them to unless I reboot the device, possibly because of memory handling
- the email app wont show images, dunno if it's because I use gmail accounts only
- the touchscreen is a bit random, seems to get scratched a bit too fast even when less than a month old
- wifi seems a bit random too, I did some tests to prove this but they didn't. I used Darla Macks page (with her permission) to test this. Some (average) results based on this test (in seconds), taken 2 times on different days and different times of day:
- 61 on IE7 and wlan
- 73 on N73 GPRS and the services browser, it crashed at this point, no result really
- 88 on N800 with wlan
- 103 on N73 3G and the S60 browser
- 190 on the N800 via N73 and 3G
- 207 on N73 GPRS and the S60 browser
- 780 on the N800 via N73 and GPRS
(I still think wifi is random, I might have to press the go button to surf a page alot of times before it works when I want to access a page but when it works, it's fast. Might be my Fon router too.
- battery life, could be better but it lasts longer than my N73 when tethered together by bluetooth
- Opera browser, I just lost my favorite usage of the whole thing, Google Reader mobile just doesn't work anymore on the N800 (not Operas fault, minimo doesn't work with Google Reader mobile either)
- connectivity, the N800 does switch to bluetooth connection to my N73 when wifi disappears but why cant it switch back to the wifi when bluetooth disappears?
- youtube.com, embedded videos/links to youtube videos on blogs wont work because of too long (I think) links to them. Getting the same video on youtube by searching causes no problem
- embedded audio (podcasts) on blogs, the sound mutes/pauses when the screen goes to power save mode (turns off)
- the RSS reader, it keeps read and unread items on the home screen as it wants to
- PIM, what PIM? Gimme a PIM or atleast a calendar. Though it seems I'm fine with the Google Calendar mobile as I discussed with Darla about it and started thinking about it :)
- I want more apps :)
I might have more issues to complain about but I just cant remember right now.. ;)
Next purchase to the N800 would be the Navigation kit, I'm a long time user of Navicore and will certainly love it on this device, thanks to ThoughtFix for proving that.
